Thessaloniki virtual Garden
the commitment of the Italian Consulate against the Shoah
Thessaloniki virtual Garden was created within the WeFor European project proposed by Gardens of the Righteous Worldwide Committee to create a Forest of the Righteous of Europe on the Web.
The WeFor site collects the "virtual" Gardens which have been imagined for the various European capitals, together with the already existing Gardens, to honour the exemplary figures of moral resistance to Nazism and Communism.
Hence the Gardens' trees become one great forest able to remind especially the younger generations of the founding values of civil coexistence.
Thessaloniki, Greece's second biggest city (after Athens), witnessed one of the worst tragedies of the Holocaust: almost all its Jews, nearly 55,000 of them, a half of the population of those times, died in Auschwitz. The few ones who managed to escape deportation in 1943 owe their lives to the officials of the Italian Consulate and some Greek friends.
To them we dedicated the trees inside Thessaloniki Garden.
