Profiles of exemplary figures
during ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia
The exemplary figures in this section were those who opposed the practice of ethnic cleansing during the war for the partition of the former Yugoslavia. The war had begun after the dissolution of the communist regime that followed the death of general Tito.
In 1992, Slovenia and Croatia became independent, war broke out in Bosnia, and Sarajevo was placed under siege. " Ethnic cleansing " began and involved systematic killings, the expulsion of civilians and mass rape.
The Commission of UN experts – appointed to examine the possibility of settling the conflicts in the Balkans – defined ethnic cleansing as “an attempt to make a given area ethnically homogeneous by using force or intimidation to expel people belonging to another ethnic or religious group”.
