Prime Minister of Canada recognizes European Day of the Righteous

honors legacy of Righteous Raoul Wallenberg

In a letter to Eduardo Eurnekian and Baruch Tenembaum, chairman and founder, respectively, of the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation, Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, recognized the European Day of the Righteous and the legacy of the Righteous Raoul Wallenberg. Mr. Eurnekian on 6 March expressed IRWF's will to join European Day of the Righteous and demanded all members of the Organization of American States to establish the Day of the Righteous Rescuers all over the Americas on the same date.

Harper believes Wallenberg's "heroic and righteous acts during one of the darkest chapters in human history are an inspiration to all those who cherish human rights and freedoms." and maintains that "Canada was proud to grant Raoul Wallenberg the first honorary citizenship in Canada's history".  In honoring Wallenberg's legacy, Harper is "reaffirming Canada's unwavering commitment to fight against the evils of racism, anti-Semitism and intolerance."

Dear Mr. Eurnekian and Mr. Tenenbaum:

Thank you for your letter of January 24, regarding the 2012 European Parliament decision to declare March 6 as, The Day of the Righteous, to mark the centenary of the birth of Mr. Raoul Wallenberg. I was pleased to read that your Foundation has commemorated the same date as, The Day of Righteous Rescuers, for all countries in the Americas.

Mr. Wallenberg's heroic and righteous acts during one of the darkest chapters in human history are an inspiration to all those who cherish human rights and freedoms. Canada was proud to grant Raoul Wallenberg the first honorary citizenship in our country's history. Through this act, Canada not only honoured the legacy of an extraordinary man, but reaffirmed our country's unwavering commitment to fight against the evils of racism, Antisemitism and intolerance.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to write. I extend my best wishes for continued success at the International Raoul Wallenberg foundation, as you develop educational programs and public awareness campaigns based on the values of solidarity and civic courage.

Sincerely,

The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada
