Continued gender inequality in Iran

women banned from attending volleyball match

On June 16, 2014 Brazil’s national men’s volleyball team squared off against Iran in the Azadi Stadium in Teheran. A rather large event, no doubt, many spectators from both nations were in attendance.  While the Brazilian citizens were free to cheer and support their team, the same cannot be said for all of Iran.

On the day of the match, as with many other sporting events held in Azadi, the women of Iran were banned from and locked out of the stadium. Rules mandated by the Iranian government deem their presence inappropriate at live events for solely men’s teams.

In response for to the protests against this harsh rule, justification was that Iranian women "should have been kept in the house and pray for the success of the game in favor of the national team."Most surprising, was the ability of Brazilian women to enter the stadium freely. This blatant fact sparked response from students, activists and others in the press and questioned the value of Iranian identity.

Although Iran’s loss of the volleyball match against Brazil is a sad one, there is much progress to work toward in other areas of society.
