Anniversary of the Rwandan genocide

7th April 1994 - 2009

From 7th to 13th April Rwanda commemorated the 15th an niversary of the genocide in which more than one million people were murdered.
President Paul Kigame opened the commemorations in Nyanza, the hill above Kigali, where 5,000 Tutsis were slaughtered. The ceremony was also attended by the former commander of the UN peacekeeping force Roméo Dallaire, a controversial character having already criticised the UN several times, who admitted the responsibilities of the United Nations, unable to stop the massacres if not complicit with it.
In the evening there will be a wake to remember the victims.
There has recently been a new awakening of the criticism targeted at the International Criminal Court set up in Arusha (Tanzania). Various sources say it is too slow and Amnesty International in particular says this judicial organ is too influenced by the Rwandan government which would interfere in its activity in order to protect some members of the Rwandan Patriotic Front.
Commemorations will take place also in Tanzania and Uganda, where the persecuted refugees flew then.
In Kenya, a multimedia agency published a documentary telling about the Rwanda genocide through the voice of an African journalist. Also in the Black Continent, bloggers and activists are starting relying on themselves to report crises and conflicts of their areas on air over the Internet.
