"We must work for reconciliation"

Aung San Suu Kyi's speech

After 7 years under house arrest Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy, the Burmese opposition party, was set free.
Her first speech was welcmomed by a crowd of more than 4,000 people who waited for her outside the party seat. The Nobel Prize Laureate spoke about the opportunity to support the international sanctions against Burma for national reconciliation.

"We have always said we depend on people, we cannot reach our goals withot relying on people - she said. Now we must systematically work together. I have already said it and I would like to say it again, we must work together. You will never win only by hoping. You can't achieve what you want by yourselves. You must act, be very courageous. We must find the right way, a way that does not imperil people. And we must reach our goals. I have always believed in national understanding, we must go this direction. I nurture no resentment against those who forced me into house arrest. To them I say that she have no more need to stop me".

During the press conference followiing the speech, the leader declared she is ready to meet the chief of the Military Junta Than Shwe and confermed that her party will publish a report on the elections that have just taken place.
