On the head of the snakes

the difficult balance of Yemen, Syria and Bahrein

Out of the sight of the international community, some regimes are repressing opponents. It's the case of three Arab Countries where regimes keep on "dancing on the head of the snakes", as Yemen's leader Saleh is used to describing his increasingly awkward policy of ruling by dividing the tribes from each other In these political intricacies we witnessed actions such as the detenton of 15 children in Syria, guilty for singing antiregime slogans. Eventually Bahrein is killing protests in a repressive policy which accordingly to Human Rights Watch has been going on for a decade.

Situation in Syria
Assad's regime has been extraordinarily stable fo 50 years Some demonstrators have recently gathered in the towns of Deraa and Damascus and the regime didn't hesitate to through teargas into their mosques, killing at least six people. This is one pf the reasons why human rights watch launched a "day of rage" on 18 March, another one being the astonishing arrest of 15 children. There have been violent clashes and arrests of civil society exponents, while Assad is making vague promises.

Defections in Yemen
Salehì's tactics might not persuade the population. Some tribal chiefs told the New York Times they were all founded and given weapons by the same source, the government, that is thus losing the traditional consensus among the tribe members. While a series of ministers and officials turned on the side of the rebels, there have been attempts of government reshuffle, but maybe Saleh won't manage to calm down the people. An ex minister said to the foreign press: "It's ridiculous to see all these exponents of the regime who suddenly become revolutionaries without being ever held accountable for the crimes committed while on power".

Bahrain, ten years repression
The crisis in Manama dates back to long ago. Human Rights Watch points out an ongoing religious conflict between the Shia majority and the Sunni rulers. There are many arbitrary restrictions to the civil and political rights of the population. Recently the target of the political police, called National Security Apparatus, have been the activists who dare talk to the foreign journalists.
