Signs of detente at the 38° parallel

dialogue between North and South Korea

Seoul and Pyongyang suspended their relation in 2008, when a South Korean tourist was murdered by the North soldier, and South reacted by halting the travels in the communist country. The two States scowled at themselves also for the North Korean nuclear program, the Pyongyang missile testing and for an accident in 2010 that made 46 South Korean victims.

This enmity was also clear in commercial retaliations, as in the industrial area of Kaesong, that was recently closed when North Korea interrupted the cross-border communications and fired 53.000 workers. The peak of these problems, that at the same time creates hope, are the families divided during the Cold War, who now see the opportunity to reunite with their relatives.

Last Thursday something went for the better. Pyongyang showed the intention to restart the dialogue, that was suddenly welcomed by Seoul. For the moment, they talk about restoring the economic cooperation, but the North Korean Committee for the “pacific reconciliation of the homeland” talks about “obtaining the unification and the prosperity in peace”. The Minister of Unification of Seoul hoped for the “opportunity to set links of faith between North and South”.
